oslo, Norway

Oslo Barcode

Oslo the capital of Norway is my favourite  Nordic city, and one that I can't recommend enough. The city is beautiful with so much to see and do and  the people, also beautiful and always welcoming of their visitors.

You will fly into Gardermoen Airport just outside Oslo, and one of the first things you will see once landed is the duty free shop that greets you.  For sure top up on some drink of some sort - as all the stories you've heard about alcohol in Norway being extortionate is true!

In Oslo, as with most of Norway, there is no need for local currency as everywhere from taxis to corner stores take credit or debit card. The best way to Oslo is the Express Train that departs the Airport every 10 minutes and takes just 20 minutes to get you to the city centre.  Walk up to the train barrier and swipe your payment card and on you go!

The express train takes you straight into Oslo train station where the city centre is walking distance and a cab for no more than 15 mins would get you to much of Oslo

Oslo - To do

Oslo Opera House

Oslo's Opera House isn't as iconic or as well known as Sydney's, but it should be. Opened in 2008 it changed the waterfront in Oslo, and has continued to bring change to this district. It's design is intended to look like the building rises from the water and is stunning anytime of year whether its covered in snow or the midnight sun, it is quite something and really worth a visit, and don't forget to climb onto the roof.

Vigeland Park

Vigeland Park is the world's largest sculpture park showcasing the work of a single artist, Gustav Vigeland. With over 200 of his sculptures in the park it really represents his lifetime of work. The park is open all year and like everything else in Oslo, the park is enjoyed by locals and tourists alike whatever the season. I recommend getting there early in the day or towards the end of the day to enjoy sunset.

Nordic Folk Museum

After a 10 minute boat ride from the main harbour you arrive at Bygdøy and take a short walk to the Nordic Folk Museum, which presents life in Norway from 1500 to the present day via buildings that have been relocated to the museum grounds. An interesting, educational trip that will give you an insight into the history of how Norwegians have lived.

Ekerberg Sculpture Park

The park is large, with woods, established paths and art. All sculptures are of high quality and are representative of European art history of the last 130 years. The combination of Ekeberg's long history, the beautiful nature and the splendid sculptures offers visitors a triple experience. The park offers amazing views over Oslo, and also has Munch’s Scream Hill where you can pose for the classic scream pose.
